What Cataract Surgery Involves

Cataract surgery is a quick outpatient procedure. The cloudy natural lens of your eye is removed and replaced with a clear artificial lens, called an intraocular lens (IOL). Most procedures take less than 30 minutes per eye and are performed under local anesthesia.

Diagram comparing a healthy eye to an eye with cataract. The top left shows a healthy blue eye with a clear, bright pupil, labeled 'Healthy eye.' To the right, a transparent blue lens is labeled 'Clear lens.' The bottom left displays an eye with a cataract, where the pupil appears cloudy or gray, labeled 'Eye with cataract.' To the right of that, a cloudy, opaque lens is labeled 'Lens clouded by cataract.' The title 'Cataract' appears at the top.

Explore Our Lens Options

Your intraocular lens choice can impact your vision for years to come. We offer a full range of options to match different needs, lifestyles, and prescriptions.

Monofocal IOLs

A standard lens that improves distance vision. Patients typically still need glasses for reading or close-up work.

Multifocal IOLs

Offers near and far focus, reducing the need for reading glasses. May create some halos or glare at night.

Trifocal IOLs

Delivers sharp vision at all distances, especially improving intermediate range. Ideal for patients who want greater independence from corrective lenses.

EDOF (Extended Depth of Field) IOLs

Provides continuous vision across distances with fewer optical disturbances than traditional multifocal lenses.

Toric IOLs

Designed to correct astigmatism, helping patients with this condition achieve sharper, clearer vision after cataract surgery.

Achieve Sharper Vision with Light Adjustable Lenses

For patients seeking a high level of precision and personalization, we offer the Light Adjustable Lens system.

LAL

The Light Adjustable Lens allows your vision to be fine-tuned after surgery through non-invasive UV light treatments. Adjustments are made once the eye has healed to deliver highly tailored results. Patients must wear UV-blocking glasses during the healing period and attend several light adjustment visits.

LAL+

An advanced version of the LAL, this lens offers expanded adjustability, improved correction of astigmatism, and greater independence from glasses at all distances.

Our clinic is among the few in the region trained to offer this cutting-edge lens technology.

FAQs

Cataract surgery is a common outpatient procedure that removes the eye’s cloudy natural lens and replaces it with a clear artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL). The surgery typically takes less than 30 minutes per eye and is performed under local anesthesia. Most patients notice improved vision within a few days.

You may be a candidate if you’ve been diagnosed with a cataract and it’s interfering with your daily vision, such as reading, driving, or seeing in low light. Your ophthalmologist will assess your eye health, lifestyle goals, and any other conditions (like astigmatism or dry eye) to confirm that surgery is the right next step.

We offer a full range of intraocular lenses to match your vision needs:

  • Monofocal IOLs improve distance vision.
  • Multifocal and Trifocal IOLs help reduce the need for glasses at near and far distances.
  • EDOF IOLs provide continuous focus with fewer night vision effects.
  • Toric IOLs correct astigmatism.
Your provider will walk you through the options and help you choose based on your vision goals.

The Light Adjustable Lens allows your vision to be customized after surgery. Once your eye heals, we use painless UV light treatments to adjust the lens power for highly personalized results. This technology is ideal for patients who want the most precise outcome. LAL+ offers even more advanced adjustability and greater freedom from glasses.

No—cataract surgery is virtually painless. We use numbing eye drops and mild sedation to keep you comfortable. You may feel slight pressure but no pain during the procedure. Some patients experience mild irritation or light sensitivity afterward, which usually resolves within a few days.

Most patients notice clearer vision within 48 to 72 hours. Full healing takes a few weeks. You'll need to use prescribed eye drops and avoid rubbing your eyes or doing strenuous activities at first. Light Adjustable Lens patients return for post-op UV treatments once the eye has healed.

Yes—if you have astigmatism, a Toric IOL or Light Adjustable Lens can correct it during cataract surgery. This helps improve clarity and reduce your dependence on glasses. Your eye specialist will perform diagnostic testing to recommend the best lens for your vision and corneal shape.

That depends on the lens you choose. Standard monofocal lenses correct distance vision, but you may still need glasses for reading. Premium lenses like multifocal, trifocal, EDOF, and LAL+ are designed to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses at all distances. We’ll help you understand the trade-offs of each option.

Yes—basic cataract surgery with a standard monofocal lens is typically covered by Medicare and most private insurance plans. Premium lenses, such as multifocal, EDOF, toric, or LAL, often involve additional out-of-pocket costs. We’ll review all pricing, coverage, and financing options with you before scheduling surgery.

Choosing a lens depends on your lifestyle, visual priorities, and any underlying eye conditions. During your consultation, we’ll discuss how you use your vision daily—whether for driving, reading, or screen time—and explain the pros and cons of each IOL option, including cost considerations. Our goal is to help you see clearly in the ways that matter most to you.
